ELAT Test Preparation

Companies and individuals offering help with ELAT do not have a special insight into the nature of the test. While a candidate's performance at any test will improve with some familiarisation or practice, anyone thinking of paying for such help should consider very carefully whether they would be wasting their money.

Sample Paper

The sample paper has been compiled to show the structure and style of the English Admissions Test.

There will be a single task or question, designed to assess a candidate's responsiveness to unfamiliar literary material and skills in close reading. Candidates' essays will be based on a comparative analysis of two or three items of unseen poetry or prose contained in the question paper. Candidates may choose any of the items, and will be expected to explain in their introduction why they have chosen them and what they hope to discover or illustrate by comparing them.

Suggested textbooks and further reading

ELAT is not a test of wide reading, nor is it based on the assumption that there are certain texts that all students should have read by this stage in their education.
